Windows were smashed yesterday in the building of the British consulate today as a result of renewed anti-British demonstrations organized by the ‘He’Chalutz, Zionist pioneer youth organization, in protest against the British statement of policy on Palestine.
The demonstrations took place in front of the British embassy and the British consulate. Strong police detachments guarded the buildings and prevented the demonstrants from entering.
In the afternoon a second demonstration took place outside the consulate building under the auspices of the Zionist Labor Party, Poale Zion. Shouting, “down with the British government” the demonstrants hurled stones at the consulate building but were dispersed by reinforced police patrols. As they were scattered by the police the demonstrators sang Hatikvah, the Jewish national song.
As a result of the demonstration four Jews were arrested. The building of the British embassy and consulate is now under police guard.
Meanwhile a special meeting of the Agudath Israel, Orthodox Organization, adopted a protest resolution against “the inadmissible British injustice.” Similar resolutions were also adopted at a number of Jewish protest meetings held simultaneously throughout the country.
