One of the greatest Jewish meetings ever held in Cleveland took place on Thursday night in the Public Auditorium in protest against the recent British White Paper on Palestine. Over four thousand people attended and cheered Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver when the latter declared that “the last word on Palestine was not said by Lord Passfield” and that Zionism will be carried on by Jews all over the world in spite of all hindrances.
Former City Manager William R. Hopkins, who was one of the principal speakers, stated that one thing for which the American people never criticized President Wilson was his consent to the establishment of a Jewish National Home in Palestine, since Americans were unanimous in considering this to be justified. Jews of this country, said Mr. Hopkins, should demand American intervention, since not only British but also American honor is involved in the breach of the Palestine Mandate.
Other speakers were Rabbi Barnet Brickner and Isaac Carmel, who spoke in Yiddish. Ezra Shapiro presided. A telegram from Rabbi Stephen S. Wise calling upon the meeting to contribute to the recently-created Zionist Emergency Fund brought in several thousand dollars.
