New efforts on the part of influential legal and scientific circles in Austria to reopen the case of Philip Halsmann, young Jew now serving a four year prison term for patricide, began here today. In an endeavor to prove Halsmann’s innocence and to show that his trial was biased, a number of prominent professors have taken it upon themselves to examine the grounds on which Halsmann was convicted.
Prof. Sigmund Freud, interesting himself in the case for the first time, criticizes the psychoanalytic elements in the verdict. The Austrian judiciary has thus far shown no signs of supporting the movement but well-informed circles are of the opinion that the case will be reopened next year.
