Jewish holidays like Chanukah and Passover should be celebrated in the public schools, just as the latter celebrate Christmas, especially when a large number of the pupils in a particular public school are Jewish. This was the contention of Rabbi Leon S. Lang, made during a lecture which he delivered on Sunday at Temple Oheb Shalom.
“In a country that necessarily is predominantly Christian,” said Rabbi Lang, “we have reason to believe that if the public schools must reflect the Christian influence, at least there should be same effort made to cultivate also an appreciation of the finer values and beautiful practices of other religions, especially of those which a large proportion of the pupils profess.”
