M. Gonatas, governor-general of Saloniki, today informed Eli Benusiglio, president of the Jewish Communal Council, that the government was considering additional measures of relief for the Jewish refugees from the Campbell quarter which was razed by fire on June 29 as the outcome of an anti-Semitic riot. Last week George Maris, minister of finance, placed 500,000 drachmas at the disposal of Governor Gonatas for the reconstruction of the burned quarter.
In the meantime three Greeks, Atamadjides, Boussoulides and Velissaridous, were arrested today on suspicion of having been among the incendiaries who fired the Campbell quarter. Apart from repeated stone-throwing late last night at the synagogue harboring about 50 refugee families from the Campbell section, nothing untoward has been reported.
