Lionel Sutro, retired New York banker and philanthropist, died on Tuesday at Santa Monica, California, at the age of 72. Mr. Sutro, who was born in New York and educated in the public schools of this city, founded together with his brother, Richard, the banking firm of Sutro Brothers & Co. and was for many years a member of the New York Stock Exchange. He retired from active business about twenty-five years ago, and since then had devoted himself to philanthropic and civic affairs, being especially interested in providing more playgrounds for New York children.
