On Thursday, October 29th., a big fair was to have opened at Grodzisk, in the Province of Posen, says a report which has just arrived here. On Wednesday, the 28th., about 9 o’clock in the evening, traders arrived there from various towns and townships to claim their pitches. Half an hour later, at 9.30 in the evening, about 200 hooligans arrived armed with knives, clubs and other weapons, and started beating only the Jewish traders, who were watching their pitches. the Jewish traders started running on all sides, and hid in the basements of Christian restaurants. Until late at night the hooligans went on with their work. People shouted for the police, but no police came. This went on till 2 a.m. A delegation of traders then went to the police station, but they found it closed. At about 2.30 a.m. the hooligans began to loot the Christian stalls, but the Christian traders put up a fight against the hooligans.
At 7 o’clock in the morning, when the police station was opened, a delegation of traders went there, and a police report was drawn up, showing that 162 pedlars and small-traders had suffered damage. There are also a great many wounded, including two Jews who are seriously wounded, Feiwel Messer of Kalisch, with a broken head, and Abraham Moshkowitch also of Kalisch, with a broken leg. Abraham Weger, Moses Tomberg, Shachter, Breger, Jacob Shapiro, B. Rosenbloom, Katz, Mera, Solomon Lipshitz, Wolf Getreiman, Sodolski, Levi and two girls named Messer and Zaddik, have slight injuries.
A delegation of the Central Federation of Jewish Small-Wraders has intervened with the authorities, demanding that the guilty should be punished, and that pedlars should be given adequate protection so that they should be able to travel and trade in Posen and Pomerania without fear of being attacked.
