A wholesale exodus of Jews of the upper and middle classes from all parts of Germany to Belgium is reported by the New York Times in a mail correspondence.
The movement, says the correspondence, has been going on for some time and German Jews are establishing a garden city on the sea coast. One large hotel has just been purchased in Jewish interests and much money is being invested in Belgian coast resorts. This new money is very welcome as the hotels are having a record season for losses of every description.
“There is some speculation whether the Belgian coast is merely a jumping off place or a waiting room, so to speak, until it can be seen how things will go in Germany. Under certain conditions, the wealthy Jews will probably go on to the United States and Great Britain after remaining in Belgium long enough to settle their affaires,” according to the despatch.
