The possibility that the municipality of Havana will change its decree raising the fee of peddlers licenses from $6 to $12 a person, to the sum of either $20 or $25, was indicated here yesterday.
The rise in the price of licenses fees, announced on July 25, has jeopardized the economic position of 500 Jewish peddlers who are unable to pay the fee. It is estimated that 60 percent of the Jewish peddlers would be without means of livelihood should this new regulation be carried into effect.
The announcement of the new measure aroused sharp protests in Jewish circles and brought about representations to the authorities on the part of the Jewish Centre.
These representations will bring about either the complete nullification of the decree or a reduction of the fee to either $20 or $25, it is stated.
