The deplorable situation in Germany has caused a number of Jewish artists to deny their Jewish affiliation and even to join the Nazi movement in an effort to escape the lash of the Nazi whip. This statement was made by S. Hurok, noted Jewish musical entrepeneur, in an interview with a representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency upon his return from Europe.

As an example, Mr. Hurok gave the case of Eric Kleiber, noted German conductor, who has appeared in the United States with the Philharmonic Orchestra. Herr Kleiber is a Jew, but he denies this and has joined the Hitlerite movement in order to maintain his position in the German musical world, alleged Mr. Hurok.

The present situation of the German Jews recalls Czaristic Russia when Jews pretended they were Christians, some even going through the conversion forms, in order to secure permission to reside in Moscow and St. Petersburg, which were barred to Jews, Mr. Hurok said.

He asserted that the von Papen government is not very energetic in its measures to counteract the anti-Semitic propaganda of Adolph Hitler’s cohorts.
