The Federation of Chicago Jewish Congregations, representing twenty-two reform and conservative congregations, has decided to abolish free service periods for adults during the high holydays and will not permit anyone to enter the synagogues for services unless tickets are shown.
The resolutions were not adopted, Gustav D. Golding, president of the Federation explained, “to deny any poor person the right to worship, but because of the common practice of a great many people who could afford to pay for the luxuries, but who demanded admission to our religious institutions during the high holydays and expect such institutions to be maintained throughout the year by their regular members.”
Persons who are unable to purchase tickets will be given free tickets as long as they are available at various temples, it was explained, upon application.
