The president of Cuba, General Gerardo Machado, has ordered the head of the municipality of Havana to rescind its order raising the price of peddlers’ licenses from $6 to $120, it was learned here yesterday.
This information was imparted in a telegram received by Mrs. Elena Goldstein, president of the Jewish Women’s Federation, which had made representations to the president concerning the matter as 500 Jewish peddlers would have been unfavorably affected by the ruling.
The matter of peddlers’ licenses has been pending for some months. When the announcement of the sharp rise in license fees was announced, it aroused a storm of protest. Various representations have been made to the Cuban authorities to revoke the order.
