Representatives to the local Jewish Community Council have given enthusiastic endorsement to the idea of a Kosher meat tax as a means of alleviating financial stress of local religious schools.
This, in effect, means the forthcoming adoption of the tax idea here and it now remains for representatives of the Council to work out arrangements with the Kosher Butchers’ Association of the city as to the imposition of a tax on kosher meat and slaughtering of poultry.
Former City Attorney Charles H. Roemer has designated a special committee to acquaint the public with the necessity for imposing the tax. Similar talks were given in various pulpits during the Yom Kippur and Succoth observances.
Ezekiel Lodge, the Newark constituent of the B’nai Brith, marked the 90th anniversary of its parents organization, with a special program. The principal speakers were Dr. Charles I. Hoffman, rabbi of Oheb Shalom Synagogue of Newark and a former president of the district grand lodge, and William M. Untermann, present head of District Grand Lodge No. 3.
