Lieutenant-Governor Herbert H. Lehman last night began an intensive tour of upper New York State in the interests of his candidacy for governor.
He spoke in Albany and Troy last night. His up-state campaign will close on October 31st. The last week of his drive will be conducted in New York.
The support of the garment trade was assured Colonel Lehman on Wednesday at a luncheon given in his honor by the Women’s Apparel Industry at the Garment Center Club.
Colonel Lehman is well known in the garment industry for his work as a mediator and his successful mediation of threatened strikes.
Support of his candidacy was assured him by Leo A. Del Monte, president of the Industrial Council of the Cloak, Suit and Skirt Manufacturers, by Moses D. Mossessohn, executive chairman of the Associated Dress Industries of America in behalf of his industry, and in the addresses delivered by Harry Uviller, executive director of the American Cloak and Suit Manufacturers Association, and Salvator Ninto, first vice-president of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
Colonel Lehman’s record was lauded by Jesse I. Straus, president of R. H. Macy and Company, who was one of the speakers. Morris W. Haft, former president of the Merchants Ladies’ Garment Association, presided.
Colonel Lehman was a speaker on Wednesday evening at the annual Tammany ratification meeting. On that occasion Alfred E. Smith, making his first public appearance in the interests of the Democratic campaign, warmly urged the election of Colonel Lehman. Nathan Straus, Jr. was the chairman of the meeting.
