The influential Guggenheim family of the United States, whose subsidies to Austrian Scientific Institutions allegedly in the amount of thousands of dollars annually, have withdrawn their subventions owing to the anti-Semitic brutalities at the University of Vienna, according to an unconfirmed report here.
Many other American philanthropists and large donors from other lands have informed the Austrian government and the University authorities that they are withdrawing their support for the same reason, another unconfirmed report states.
This action has created a difficult situation for the government inasmuch as Austrian scientific institutions are now largely dependent upon foreign support, the government being unable to assist them.
Representatives of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Murry and Leonie Guggenheim Foundation, the Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Foundation and of Guggenheim Brothers, disclaimed any knowledge of subsidies to foreign institutions or of their withdrawal, in response to an inquiry by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
