Lord Melchett, son and heir of the late Lord Melchett, was received on New Year’s day by King Carol of Roumania, at his castle in Sinia, although it had been previously announced that the King would receive no one on the New Year.
The King’s act in receiving Lord Melchett, is interpreted as a desire to demonstrate special respect to him and to the Maccabee Association of which Lord Melchett is the honorary president. King Carol is interested in the Maccabee Association and Crown Prince Michael has acted as a patron of the organization.
Upon his return from his audience with the King, Lord Melchett revealed that he had made a most important pledge to support the Maccabee movement in Roumania.
Lord Melchett was also the guest of honor at a reception arranged in the home of the Jewish industrialist, Senator Auschnitt, which was attended by the Minister of Finance and a number of former members of the Government. In the evening a banquet was arranged in his honor by Lazar Margulies, who had accompanied him to his audience with the King.
Lord Melchett came to Bucharest from Czernowitz and his journey was turned into a triumphant tour. Jewish delegations awaited the train to greet Lord Melchett at the stations Suceava, Roman, Bacau, Ploesti.
The festivities in Bucharest included a Chanukah reception in the Great Synagogue. Speakers included the Jewish Deputy, Mishu Weisman, Senator Niemirower, Dr. Lelewer, president of the World Maccabee Association. Lord Melchett declared that Palestine is part of his religion.
Lord Melchett departed for Sofia yesterday whence he will proceed to Palestine with Lady Melchett.
