Sir Joseph Duveen Raised to Baronetcy by King; Other Jews Honored

Sir Joseph Duveen, internationally known art collector, was the only Jew among the six named Lords in the King’s New Year’s honor list. He will be known as Baron Duveen of Millbank.

A number of other Jews, however, received honors. Major Isidore Salmon, member of Parliament, was knighted. Max Nurock, of the secretariat of the Palestine government, was named an officer of the Order of the British Empire and was the only Palestine Jew to be thus honored. A number of Arab and English officials received similar awards.

Dudley Meyers of India was also knighted in recognition of his political work in India.

Harry C. Luke, former secretary of the Palestine government and at present Lieutenant Governor of Malta, was among those knighted. Mr. Luke was severely criticized for his attitude during the Arab riots of 1929 in Palestine.

Sir Joseph Duveen, who was made a Baronet by King George in recognition of his public services, is well known on both sides of the Atlantic through his art work and benefactions. Married to a New Yorker, daughter of Gustav Salaman of New York, Sir Joseph spends part of each year in New York where he has an art gallery.

He has presented eight new rooms to the Tate Gallery and an entire new wing to the National Portrait gallery. He is the founder of the British Artists Exhibitions Organization for the encouragement of lesser known British artists.

Lord Duveen is a Commander of the Legion of Honor of France; an Officer of the Order of the Crown of Belgium, and of the Order of Saint Sava of Serbia. He is a trustee of the National Gallery, of the Imperial Gallery of Art and of the Wallace Collection. He is also a member of the Council of the British School at Rome, and honorary member of the Council of the National Art Collections Fund of Rome. He is the honorary correspondent of the Commissions of Ancient and Modern Art of the Royal Belgian Museum of Fine Art.

Lord Duveen is the eldest son of the late Sir Joseph Duveen.
