The Palestine Government yesterday assigned a sum of £36,000 to be distributed in the form of loans to cultivators for the winter sowing.
The loans have been necessitated by the agricultural situation which is termed critical, owing to the lack of rain coupled with dry winds. These factors, according to the government report, have ruined 200,000 dunams in the winter crop. As a result most areas must be resown. The situation further has caused an increase in the prices of agricultural commodities, the government report points out.
Prayers for rain are being recited in the colonies and in the synagogues in Jerusalem and at the Wailing Wall.
The draught which extends across the Jordan has also seriously affected the Transjordan grazing grounds where the Bedouins, depending on the pastures for their livelihood, are threatened with the loss of their flocks. So much so that the Palestine Government has in several cases allowed Bedouin tribes to cross into Palestine for pasturing.
