An appeal to the Jews of Germany to refrain from the consumption of meats, in consequence of the government’s prohibition of the kosher method of slaughter, to go into effect May 1st, was made today by the German Union of Orthodox Rabbis.
“We see in this situation,” their appeal reads in part, “God’s finger beckoning us to review our position and realize our defenselessness. We see how futile have been our attempts to cling to friends who have proved false and who wished merely to become our masters. We must realize now that we can rely on none but God in Heaven.”
The appeal calls on all German Jews to repent, strictly to observe the Sabbath and the Jewish dietary laws. “Heavy sorrows have befallen us,” the German rabbis continue, “but we must accept them, without losing courage and the hope that in faithfulness to God we will regain His help.”
