The ruin of the practice of six thousand of the seven thousand Jewish physicians in Germany is threatened in the plan to expel them from participation in the work of medical service associations, which was proposed today by Nazi officials. Comparatively few of the physicians derive any considerable part of their income from private practice and a great number would be unable to continue if their work in the health services and sick-benefit associations were withdrawn. If the one per cent numerus clausus that has been suggested goes into effect, only five hundred Jewish doctors will be permitted to practice.
Even if permission to practice is extended to all those physicians who have war service records, as was done in the case of lawyers, it is felt that the situation would not be greatly relieved, as the investigation of war records would be protracted, and the elimination of Jewish doctors from health agencies and institutions would meanwhile continue.
