Jewish hospitals, synagogues, and other institutions, in common with other public buildings, were required to hoist the swastika and the German national flag for the May Day celebration. Many Jewish shops were resplendent with the black-and-red swastika. This brought ironical comment from strangers not yet acquainted with the doubled-irony of the situation, for these stores are no longer Jewish, but are controlled by Nazi commissars who were installed when the Jewish proprietors were forced to retire.
Jews were conspicuously few in the streets of the Jewish quarter in order to avoid collision with the rousting Nazis celebrating the first of May.
SCHOOLBOYS PESTER STORES
Meanwhile a new form of annoyance has appeared for the German Jews. Numerous schoolboys who belong to the Nazi youth organizations spend their spare time systematically pestering the Jewish shops and homes, asking for contributions in support of their organizations. This form of blackmail is used intensively by the children, as the Jews are forced to contribute in fear of report and retaliation.
Nazi pickets have this week appeared outside many Jewish refreshment houses in North Berlin. The pickets are mainly engaged in selling ices, as the summer season is just beginning. Customers of the refreshment houses are persistently approached by them.
