Collaboration between social classes and groups was urged in a speech by Dr. John L. Elliott, head of the Hudson Guild, at the annual all-day session held by the Federation of Jewish Women’s Organizations yesterday at the Congregation Emanu-El community house.
“All humanity must cooperate in these difficult times between all social groups and classes,” said Dr. Elliott.
About 286,000 unemployed girls were given lodging in 1932 at the Y.W.H.A., said Mrs. Felix Warburg, the president, in a report on her organization’s unemployment relief for Jewish women. Mrs. Rebekah Kohut, former president of the National Council for Jewish Women, also spoke at the morning meeting.
“Charter Revision” was the main address at the afternoon session, delivered by Miss Pearl Bernstein, secretary of the Municipal Affairs Committee of the New York League of Women Voters.
Mrs. Nathaniel Levy, chairman of the federation’s division of religion, followed with a report that new quarters were being added to the synagogue at Sea View Hospital, Staten Island, devoted to tubercular cases. It was first equipped in 1930 by the federation, she said, and now funds were needed to enlarge it still further.
The other speakers were Mrs. A. J Davidson on the subject “Health for Undernourished Children” and Mrs. Morris Jacoby, recording secretary of the federation, on “Education.” Social service and religion completed the subjects for the talks at the afternoon session.
The delegates and guests from various Jewish organizations that attended totalled about 500, representing 200 constituent organizations. Lunch was served at the Isaac Mayer Wise Memorial Hall in the basement of the building.
