An appeal was issued yesterday by Samuel Untermyer, generalissimo of the anti-Hitler boycott forces, that rabbinical leaders take advantage of the High Holidays by “preaching boycott” from their pulpits. A rider to his appeal calls for contributions toward a fund of $500,000 which is to be used to mobilize forces to prosecute the boycott.
Meanwhile word was received that H. Nelson Street, secretary of the Retail Dry Goods Association of New York, has reported “extensive and effective” cooperation by consumers in the city who have supported the boycott. Retailers at a conference to discuss the effect of the boycott reported that purchases and sales of German products have minimized to such an extent that less than one per cent of total stock on hand in each of the large department stores was imported from Germany.
Fear that an actual ban placed on all German goods “would set a dangerous precedent” has prompted the stores to regulate their importations from Germany according to demand. This has of course meant that the importations are down to minimum and the boycott works automatically without the necessity of a formal declaration by the stores. The figure representing the drop in quantity of German products carried is between 50 and 84 percent.
