Advice to the Jews of the world that it would have been wiser for them to abstain from any outcry against the Jewish discriminations in Germany was given today by Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Minister of Propaganda, in the course of an interview with the French paper, Le Soir, of Paris.
“It is the fault of the Jews and not ours that the Jewish question has now been raised all over the world for discussion,” Goebbels declared. “Had the Jews remained silent, the Jewish problem would not have become so acute and in Germany itself it would by now have been removed from the agenda.”
The Nazi Minister, however, did not state whether, if the Jews had refrained from any protest, the Nazi government would have modified its anti-Semitism or would by now have carried out its anti-Jewish program, completely unhindered by public opinion throughout the world.
Goebbels maintains that anti-Semitism has always formed a part of the Nazi program and sees no reason for the present protest, since everybody should have been prepared for it.
He admitted that from the humane viewpoint the Jews had been harshly treated, but he emphasized that all anti-Jewish measures had been carried out through legislation, asking whether the Jews would have preferred that the mass embitterment against the Jews be given free rein.
