Germany’s resignation from the League of Nations and the summoning of a new Reichstag election for November 12 constitute a blow to Jewish interests because it eliminates the moral pressure which the League has thus far exercised in modifying the anti-Jewish policies put into effect by the Nazi regime.
Whatever the attitude of the German Government may be towards the German Jews, it is clear that the fight conducted by Jews abroad for the restoration of Jewish rights henceforth will have to be conducted along altogether different lines since League intercession is no longer of influence here.
Foreign circles here point out that the decision of the German government to quit the League is due not only to the disagreement over disarmament but also to the recent discussions of the Jewish question regarding which the German delegation at Geneva felt very bitter. The decision of the government to withdraw from the League was no surprise to the public since it had been forecast on the grounds of the Jewish question in the German press during the past few days.
