Dr. Nahum Sokolow, president of the World Zionist Organization, headed the traditional march to the grave of Dr. Theodor Herzl, founder of the Zionist movement. In the procession to the grave in the Jewish cemetery where Dr. Herzl lies buried Dr. Sokolow was accompanied by the Zionist president of the Vienna Jewish community, Dr. Friedman.
Austrian chalutzim, future pioneers in Palestine, and Zionist students acted as a guard of honor at the graveside.
In view of the general tension in Austria, the police prohibited a march through the streets and the display of Zionist banners and emblems. However, the number of Zionists assembled at the cemetery itself was larger than usual.
The annual procession to the grave of the founder of Zionism on the anniversary of his death the twentieth of Tammuz, which fell this year, according to the Jewish calendar on July 14, had not been held either, since police feared attacks by the Austrian Nazis.
Zionist leaders are anxious to transfer the remains of Dr. Herzl to Palestine at the earliest possible moment, in order that the tradition of processions to his grave may be continued.
