Samuel Untermyer yesterday defended the friendship of mayoralty candidate F. H. LaGuardia toward the Jews, expressed in a statement issued by Mr. LaGuardia, in 1919. Several days ago, James W. Gerard, former ambassador to Germany, published the statement as an instance of Mr. LaGuardia’s “anti-Semitism”. Mr. Gerard is a McKee backer.
“The Jews should feel under obligation to Mr. Gerard for calling attention to the striking contrast between the friendship evinced by Mr. LaGuardia’s statement and the bigoted utterances of the Recovery party’s candidate,” said Mr. Untermyer.
