Hamilton Fish, Jr., ranking Republican member of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee and ardent anti-Communist crusader, Friday disavowed connections with the American Section of the International Committee to Combat the World Menace of Communism, and set forth the fact that his name, subscribed to the volume, “Communism in Germany”, now being distributed throughout the United States by that committee, was used without his permission or knowledge.
Mr. Fish told the Jewish Daily Bulletin that he had never heard of the committee and that he had merely glanced over the book.
Mr. Fish was attacked during the hearings of the Dickstein committee of inquiry by C. A. Hathaway, Communist editor of the Daily Worker, on the basis of his alleged association with publication of this volume.
The testimony of the Communist editor incited a sharp rebuke from Samuel Untermyer who pronounced the Dickstein investigation as “unofficial and irresponsible” ### fended Fish as “one of the best friends and champions the Jews ever had in this country,” and he forecast the bringing into the open of “secret, seditious activities in violation of our hospitality, in a responsible way and by legal evidence.”
FISH THANKS UNTERMYER
In a letter to Mr. Untermyer, made public through the Jewish Daily Bulletin, Representative Fish thanked the veteran Jewish leader for undertaking his defense and pledged his cooperation in exposing and counteracting “Fascism, Hitlerism and anti-Semitism anywhere in the United States.” His letter follows:
“Dear Mr. Untermyer:
“I read with interest your statement in today’s press, in which you state that I am one of the best friends and champions of the Jews in this country, and take this opportunity to thank you for your expression of public confidence. I am enclosing, in case you have not seen it, a copy of the telegram I sent to Representative Dickstein, which is self-explanatory.
“I note in your statement that you refer to the extensive Nazi propaganda in the United States, and wish to make clear to you that I am just as much opposed to Fascism and Nazi propaganda as I am to Communism, both of which are inimical to our Republican form of Government guaranteed to each State by the Constitution of the United States.
“When the time comes, I shall be very glad to cooperate with you as the Ranking Republican Member
