German Jews can hope for no change in their status in the future, Vice-Chancellor Franz von Papen stated in a speech delivered several days ago at Gleiwitz, Upper Silesia. The text of the speech was published today for the first time.
The German government intends to proceed with its racial policy and make the “Jews disappear from public life in Germany,” von Papen declared. He replied to the attack made by the Austrian Catholic Bishops, who charged Germany with stimulating racial hatred. He insisted that Germany is not acting against the Jews but merely combating their growth, which is frequently done in Austria, the Vice-Chancellor pointed out.
“We hope,” von Papen concluded, “that the prophetic words pronounced in 1896 by the Christian leader, Leuger, that the nations of the world will cease quarreling among themselves, when the Jews are once and forever conquered, will find immediate realization, especially in German Austrian relations.”
