The influential Lisbon daily Seculo yesterday denied that there had been negotiations for the settlement of German’ Jewish refugees in Angola, Portuguese West Africa. The paper states that it has feSen officially authorized by the Portuguese government to contradict the report, adding that no one in official Portuguese circles was aware of any such proposals.
A report originating in Berlin on Jan. 2 stated that an expedition of Jews was about to set out from Germany to investigate the possibility of German Jewish settlement in West Africa. According to the report this action followed protracted negotiations with the Portuguese government. The Berlin report set-forth in convincing detail the terns of the agreement reached with the Portuguese government.
However that same day, London Jewish organizations engaged in German relief work and the Portuguese legation in London denied knowledge of the alleged negotiations. London Jewish .leaders declared, however, that plans for Jewish settlement in West Africa had frequently been under consideration since the end of the war.
