Officers of the newly established Indiana Conference of Reformed Jewish Congregations this week are busy with organization details of the conference. The conference was established at a meeting of approximately 500 delegates, from reformed congregations throughout the state, Sunday at the Indianapolis Hebrew Temple.
Officers are Dr. Charles J. Rothchild, Fort Wayne, Ind., chairman; Ben Blumberg, Terre Haute, Ind., vice-chairman, and Rabbi Philip W. Jaffa, Cincinnati, O., secretary. The meeting was held under the sponsorship of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.
Importance of Jewish contributions in virtually all movements which have meant advancement of humanity was pointed out in an address by Dr. Israel Bettan, of the Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, the principal speaker.
“The ancient Jews’ attainments are lauded today but the worthy reward of their work is denied their descendants”, he said.
I. F. Kahn, treasurer of the Indianapolis congregation, attacked the bazaar, ticket sales and other methods of raising funds for religious work, as unavailing. He advocated, instead, a system of dues allocated according to the congregation’s budget.
