“I am neither an Aimee McPherson nor a Charles Lee Smith. I can accept engagements as a speaker, but I cannot submit to be made a target. Personally I would be willing to meet you in open debate, but I believe my government would hardly approve.”
This was the answer today of Dr. Walther L. Reinhardt, German consul here, to a challenge by Judge Samuel R. Stern, white-haired former state bar association president, to a public debate on Nazi anti-Semitism, which Consul Reinhardt, in talks before several organizations, has sought to justify.
Meanwhile Judge Stern this week received letters warmly commending him for his public pledge that “I will, if necessary, attend every talk Consul Reinhardt delivers and answer his propaganda point by point.”
