Major Emil Fey, Austrian Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Security was chosen by the Dollfuss goverment to comat Nazi activities in Austria. Extraordinary povers were conferred upon him by the Austriam government. A note which the Austrian goverment sent the Nazi goverment was answered by the Nazis. Berlin rejected the Austrian claims of unwarranted Nazi interferecne in Austrian affairs and repeated Hitler’sdeclaration tha Naziism would not stop at the Austrain border. The Dollfuss government declared that the German reply was unsatisfactory and announed it had no ther alternative but to take further action in an international sphere. Whether of Nations to guarantee the neutrlity and independence of Austria was not stated by the Dollfuss government.

ENGLAND

Two important meetings which are bound to affet world Jewry took place in London this week At the meeting of the executive committees of the league of Nation’s autonomous governing body for German refugees and the advisory council of priveate organizations, High Commissioner Janes G. MeDonald reported progress in the varied efforts of the task assingned him. A method of carrying on the work for the refugees was worked out at the meeting. Plan for the work will be made by the private organizations while High Commissioner McDonald Carries out negotiation with the governments involved. Some of the speakers at the meeting took a gloomy view of the refugee situation predicting that a flood of refugess will come from Germany and from Austria if the Nazis are successful there. A far different picture was presented at the meeting of the Zionist commission for the settlement of German Jewish refugees in Palestine, which is headed by Dr. Chaim Weizmann, The commission reported that it had been instrumental in settling 9,000 German Jewish refugees in Palestine in 1933, and that of the estimated 250,000 Jewish refuges expected to leave Germany in the next decade more than 80,000 can be absorbed in Palestine provideing the necesary funds are available. The commission announced that it had received £121,000 in the last year and its 1934 budged was £250,000. POLAND

The New constituation promulgated by the Pilsuldski regaime is the all absording topic in Poland. Under the new constitution the regime now in power will be able to perpetuate itself and rule under a virtual dictatorship. The Jewish deputies in the Polish parliament complaned that the new regulations materially reduced the electoral power fo the Polish Jews. The Endek, anti-Semitic political party, which is also anti-goverment, is expressing its disatisfaction with the new constituition by riots against the Jews. Attacks were made on Jews in streets in the very center of warsaw and windows inJewish shops were broken. Polish curts are handling endek rioters severely, but the attacks on the Jews contiue. The Lodzer Tageblatt, one of the oldest Jewish papers in Poland, suspended publication owing to financial difficalties. Marsnal Josel Pilsudski, aged dictator of Poland assured Jewish community of Wilno that polish Jews would be treated justly.

THE REST OF EUROPE

The executive committee of the World Jewish congress will meet in Prague to fix a definite date for the forthcoming world Jewish congress. The Committee of Jewish Delegations will meet in Prague at the same time todecide upon its attituede toward the world Minorities Congress.
