A budget of $280,000 for Ameican Jewish activities was adopted at the annual meeting of the executive committee of B’nai B’rith, the money to be used during 1934 to support the nine B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundations, hundreds of Aleph Zadik Aleph chapters, good will work, anti-defamation activities and the B’nai B’rith Magazine, among other projects.
Judge I. M. Golden of San Francisco was elected first vice-president of the order, suceeding Lucius L. Solomon. Alfred M. Cohen, president of the order, in his annual report, declared that “the catastrophe which has befallen the Jewry of Germany is the greatest since the expulsion from Spain in 1492.” He rreported efforts made by B’nai B’rith during 1933 to meet the situation both here and abroad.
In his Secretary’s report, Dr. I. M. Rubinow indicated a significant increase in membership over last yea’.
More than 150 cases of anti-Jewish discrimination and defamation were reported by Richard E. Gutstadt of Chicago, director: of the Anti-Defamtion League.
Those present at the meeting, in addition to President Cohen and Secretary Rubinow, were Archibald A. Marx, Louis Fabricant, Sidney G. Kusworm, Joseph Cohen, Judge Leopold C. Glass, Monroe Friedman, Henry A. Alexander, Dr. Leon Banov, Henry Monsky, Joseph F. Grossman, Louis Cohen, Maurice D. Rosenberg, Sigmund Livinston, Richard E. Gutstadt, Louis J. Borinstein and Sam Beber.
