Ignoring-completely the Nazi ultimatum to go Nazi or quit within the next eight days, the Dollfuss government today announced that martial law, which has been in effect during the fighting between the government and the Austrian Socialists would be lifted tomorrow at 7 a.m.
Chancellor Dollfuss himself made the announcement today while delivering the funeral oration at the graves of fifty government soldiers, who were buried with impressive ceremonies.
The Austian government intends to ignore the ultimatum delivered by Theodore Habicht, Nazi “inspector general for Austria” over the powerful government-owned radio in Munich, on the ground that it was delivered by a private individual who has no official or political standing.
Early today the men who were killed in the fighting including government troops, police. Heimwehr men and some Catholic auxiliaries were buried. The government massed troops and Heimwehr battalions to act as escorts. The military were led by Vice Chancellor Emil Fey, who in a funeral oration declared that “the peace of Europe hung on a hair last week.”
In the meanwhile, the Socialists buried their dead secretly and without ceremonies.
