In the presence of about sixty of his most intimate friends, including foremost leaders of American Jewry, Dr. Cyrus Adler last night was presented with two books, one a volume containing resolutions on the occasion of his seventieth birthday anniversary observed privately last September, the other containing his selected addresses and papers and a complete bibliography of his works.
The first volume contained resolutions from Jewish organizations in every part of the world. These resolutions carried the signature of world Jewish leadership.
Presentation took place at the home of Judge Horace Stern who, in making the presentation, spoke of the high regard and affection in which Dr. Adler is held. “No presentation we can make would please Dr. Adler more,” Judge Stern said.
LOVES WORK FOR JEWRY
Accepting both volumes, Dr. Adler spoke feelingly. His work on behalf of world Jewry has always been a labor of love to him, he declared. “I enjoyed every minute of it.”
Becoming reminiscent, Dr. Adler told how he was persuaded to apply himself to Jewish communal work by his Christian family physician who appreciated his executive ability and who felt he could render most good that way. This was when he was still quite young.
Felix M. Warburg paid tribute to Dr. Adler, emphasizing the service he rendered to Jews the world over. Mr. Warburg declared that if it were not for Dr. Adler he would not have been as deeply interested in Jewish affairs as he is now. “Dr. Adler is an exemplar and I am always trying to live up to his standard of service and devotion,” the speaker concluded.
PRAISES SEMINARY WORK
Sol Stroock spoke of the work Dr. Adler has been doing on behalf of the New York Theological Seminary, and declared: “We are blessed through his leadership.”
A jovial note was struck by Dr. Adler’s daughter, Mrs. Sara Adler Wolfenson, who in speaking of his recently-born granddaughter remarked that while grownups want Adler to work with them for many years to come, the new arrival in the family wants him to play with her for many years to come.
Other speakers included Professors Marks, Davidson and Finkelstein of the New York Theological Seminary, Dr. A. S. W. Rosenbach, Dr. Soloman Solis-Cohen and Rabbi Abraham A. Neuman.
An autographed copy of the book containing Dr. Adler’s addresses was given to each person present.
