The creation of a state-wide regional organization to be affiliated with the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America was decided upon last night at a convention here of the orthodox synagogues of the State.
The new organization will embrace the entire State with the exception of Greater New York and environs which has organizations of its own.
In the keynote address of the convention, William Weiss, of New York City, national president of the Union, declared that “the time has come when orthodox Jewry in America must organize to preserve the traditional heritage of the Jews. It has become absolutely necessary to strengthen Jewish consciousness.”
Among the resolutions passed by the convention was one urging the United States to grant the right of asylum to victims of religious and political persecutions. Among the speakers were Rabbi William Margolis of New York City, and Rabbi Benjamin Brilliant, of Kingston.
A message from Governor Lehman was read, congratulating the Union on its humanitarian endeavors. The convention sent greetings to President Roosevelt, applauding his efforts to improve the country’s economic conditions.
