I am writing to ask of you the kindness, in justice to my standing in the American theatre and toward the public, to rectify the statement credited to me in an interview appearing in your valued newspaper, to the effect that “It is the rotten institution which we call the Great American Stage!”

My actual words and idea were misunderstood. I did not utter such an opinion nor such a phrase. What I said emphatically was that conditions in the American theatre are deplorable for the actor today and that the whole “system” of the American theatre was at fault.

Further, the reference to the Yiddish stage was related to the above statement as a comparison of the repertory system employed there which secures and protects the actor.
