Two hundred houses in the Tiberias area are still in ruins after the recent disastrous floods, while the government has already discontinued providing food supplies for the victims.
As a result, large number of families are starving. Hunger and lack of sanitation have led to increase in epidemic diseases. Some of the wealthier citizens are leaving the town of Tiberias.
The local Jewish community has once again issued an appeal on behalf of the afflicted, Five thousand persons were rendered homeless when the heavy torrential rain swept down on Tiberias about three weeks ago. Not a single roof was left on the houses, following the cloudburst. Many of the inhabitants were killed, others were injured or reported missing.
At that time the Palestine government announced that arrangements were made for feeding 2,000 of the flood victims. High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope visited the stricken area and promised government aid. Arabs and Jews from neighboring areas were united in relief efforts. On May 16 the High Commissioner cabled the Colonial Office in London that he was satisfied with the relief, medical treatment and the rationing of housing, clothing and food as administered by the Tiberias authorities. Sixty percent of the population of 8,601 are Jews.
