The Greek Jewish community here was reassured yesterday by cables from Castoria, Greece, that peace reigned there once more and Jews are unmolested.
Alarmed by reports of anti-Jewish excesses, in which Isaac Iliaou, son of the president of Castoria’s Jewish community, was said to have been severely injured by members of the EEE, Greek Nazi organization, New York’s Greek Jews not only cabled, through the Hessed Ne Emeth of Castorialis but also induced a large and important local society of non-Jew-the mayor of that town.
Practically all the 2,000 Greek Jews who came here from castoria were aroused by reports of the atrocities and eagerly awaited the reply. Cables came from Jacob Iliaou, president of Castoria’s Jewish community, and from Morris Hazan, father of Victor Hazan, who is secretary of the Hessed Ne Emeth in New York.
The committee of New York’s Castoria Jews who investigated included Mathew Russo, Samuel Elias, Bocko Mayo, Victor Hazan and Max Cohen. Russo returned from a visit to Castoria only three months ago, at which time, he said, its 1,000 Jews, mostly merchants, were living unmolested.
