Apathy in the furtherance of the boycott of German-made goods in Philadelphia was deplored last night by Herbert Syme, associated with the United Hebrew Trades, at a meeting arranged by the Vanguard, a Philadelphia branch of the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League. “Every time a Jew buys German products he is doing injury to the cause of Jewish self-respect,” Syme declared. “Let Germany know that we will have nothing to do with them until Hitler and his anti-Semitic policies are ousted. Our means of conveying this information to him under the present circumstances are by refraining from purchasing German made goods and by calling upon our friends, Jews and Christians alike, to join us in this peaceful means of protest.”
Rev. A. E. Palmquist, representative of the Philadelphia Federation of Churches, expressed disapproval of Hitler’s anti-Semitic government and wished the league well in its endeavor. Other speakers were warren D. Mullin, Socialist leader and economist, and Rabbi J. Gerson Brenner, who presided.
Abraham Norden, vice-chairman of the league, outlined the organization program of the boycott movement in Philadelphia, and drew up a resolution asking Samuel Untermyer, New York lawyer, to address a mass meeting of the organization later this month.
