Italy is enjoying a laugh at the wild claims of Streicher’s Jew-baiting sheet, Der Stuermer, which has recently proclaimed Enrico Caruso a Galician Jewish cantor discovered by an Italian music teacher.
“The Germans, whether Hitlerites of today or of World War fame are always the same,” writes the official Fascist organ, La Volonta d’Italia. “Formerly they used to take away our Dante, Tasso and Arriesto and make them into Germans. Today, in their anti-Jewish insanity, they turn our Caruso into a Galician Jew and call him a synagogue cantor.”
