Influenced by the attitude of proprietors of kosher shops against the high prices being asked for meats by packers, the Hebrew Butcher Workers Union on Friday afternoon voted to join the citywide strike of meat trade workers, according to George W. Sheppard of Chicago, international organizer for the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workers Union.
Approximately 5,000 members of the union will go out on strike on Monday, according to Sheppard.
The union’s decision followed action on the part of proprietors who cancelled all orders in protest against prevailing wholesale prices of beef, veal and lamb, which have risen four to five cents a pound, according to Charles Cohen, president of the Federation of Kosher Butchers of Greater New York.
