Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, chairman of the boycott committee of the American Jewish Congress yesterday made public a letter written by C. W. Toms, president of the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company in which the concern denied truth of rumors that it is contributing financial support to the Nazis or that it is discriminating against Jews in employment.
The communication expresses Toms’ highest esteem for the Jews, and says in part, “We cannot understand why such reports should be circulated except they be malicious and with intent to injure our company. Under no circumstances would we render any support, financial or otherwise, directly or indirectly to an anti-Jewish campaign for we have had at all times and have now many Jewish people in our organization, and for them we have high regard and esteem.”
The note came as a result of investigation by the American Jewish Congress following the receipt of many queries as to the status of Liggett & Myers with respect to the Nazis.”
