With fireworks celebrating a memorable moment in American history tomorrow, a silver spade will turn the first shovelful of dirt for the new Workmen’s Circle Labor Lyceum, to be erected at the corner of Carrol street and Twelfth avenue—a memorable moment in the life of Jewish labor organizations of this city.
The Lyceum will be a two-story building with numerous meeting rooms. The auditorium will seat 450.
Joseph Weinberg, president of the national organization, will attend the ceremonies, as will B. Charney Vladeck, of the Jewish Daily Forward. Others will speak also and a band will furnish music.
A campaign for $6,000 will start with the ground-breaking, the money to be used to defray the cost of construction. The general committee in charge of the drive includes Leo Rosenkopf, chairman; Max Goodman, Nathan Breitstein, Morris Cooper, Philip Janowitz, Meyer Lax, Alex Stein, Samuel Shelov and David Yedwab.
Organizations participating in the Lyceum include the Central Trades and Labor Council of Passaic County, the American Federation of Silk Workers, the Socialist Party, the Poale Zion, the Purity Cooperative Association, and ten branches of the Workmen’s Circle, including the city and district committee.
Officers of the Workmen’s Circle Labor Lyceum are Alter Skomsky, president; Leo Rosenkopf, secretary, and Nathan Breitstein, treasurer.
