The Phoenix Club, Jewish bluestocking group which for sixty-seven years has prided itself on its exclusiveness, has become increasingly exclusive during recent years, until now it faces extinction.
Economic conditions, according to Marvin Gingold, attorney for the Phoenix board of directors, have reduced the membership from 300 to 125, with the result that the club has been unable to meet expenses for the past three years.
Gingold has asked Judge Allan Campbell of the Wayne County Circuit Court to appoint a permanent receiver by August 15 and to permit the club’s dissolution.
