Chaim Nachman Bialik, Hebrew poet laureate, died suddenly tonight of a heart attack. He was sixty-one years old.

He had been in good spirits all day, reading the newspapers, commenting on current events and joking with friends. Death came without warning.

He apparently had recovered completely from the effects of an operation he had undergone here last week.

Among the first to receive news of his death were members of the administrative board of the Vienna Jewish Community, who were in session at the time. The meeting was suspended immediately.

Virtually every rabbi in the city went to the bier tonight to pay his respects to the poet. The body will be transferred to Palestine next week.
