Bickering over three zloty a month (less than sixty cents) today brought death to Isaac Krongold, Jewish landlord, and critical wounds, which may prove fatal, to his brother-in-law, Samuel Zajac.
Antony Smietanski, non-Jewish shoemaker and a tenant in Krongold’s house, was under arrest, charged with the murder.
As police reconstructed the story, Krongold, accompanied by his brother-in-law, went to Smietanski’s shop to collect the rent.
The shoemaker demanded a reduction of three zloty a month, which the landlord refused. Smietanski thereupon drew a pistol and shot Krongold dead, authorities charge. Zajac was severely wounded by a second bullet when he rushed to his brother-in-law’s defense.
