Louis Zahne, self-styled promotion manager of the Friends of New Germany, declared at the weekly meeting of the Astoria branch of the Friends that the American flag was the political emblem of the society, whereas the swastika and the flag of the German republic “were symbols of culture only.”

This tidbit was understood to be made in response to the question shot at Hubert Schnuch, national leader of the Nazi group, by Congressman Samuel Dickstein during the recent investigation of subversive propaganda. Dickstein demanded to know why the Astoria branch of the Friends holds meetings under the swastika.

Denying that the men in uniform who guarded the hall were there as a military guard, Zahne stated that they were present merely to protect women and children in case of disorder.

It was revealed at the meeting, attended by 500 men and women in the Broadway Astoria Hall, Broadway and Thirty-second Street, Astoria, that chapters are being organized at College Point, L. L., and Jamaica.
