Dr. Raphael Zon, director of the Lake States Forest experiment station, has been appointed to take charge of the technical phase of the national shelter belt project. The project, estimated to cost $65,000,000, calls for the planting of a belt of trees through the Western plains States to act as a deterrent for conditions that bring about drought.
The work of Dr. Zon on the project will be to develop technical methods to be used in raising nursery stock and in planting the trees, determining also where the various species are to be located.
Dr. Zon has been in forestry work since 1901. From 1907 to 1920 he carried on forestry research in the Federal forestry service, and in 1920 was given charge of special investigations in forest economics. He became director of the experiment station here when the undertaking was launched in 1923.
